Cam Newton NCAA Investigation Snags Ian Greengross, Darren McFadden's Agent
The Auburn Quarterback Cam Newton NCAA Investigation has snagged NFL Agent Ian Greengross. The National Football League Players Association has issued a "disciplinary complaint" against Greengross and his recruiter Kenny Rogers.
Ian Greengross is a name you may remember if you're a regular follower of Zennie62.com NFL Draft videos. Greengross is Oakland Raiders Running Back Darren McFadden's agent (and for 12 other NFL players), and first publicly appeared with McFadden at the 2008 NFL Draft.
the NFLPA’s Committee on Agent Regulation and Discipline (CARD) is investigating Greengross for his alleged involvement by being associated with Rogers, who's alleged request for a six-figure payment from Mississippi State for Newton's commitment to that school before he wound up with Auburn, has raised red flags all over the place.
Greengross is not the real target, but Rogers, whom ProFootballTalk.com reports Greengross has tried to "distance himself" from. Rogers is said to have "misrepresented" himself as an NFLPA employee and an "official from a testing service," according to the NFLPA.
Cam Newton NCAA Investigation Results in Denials
Cam Newton’s father, Bishop Cecil Newton, says NCAA investigation officials asked to see bank accounts of his Holy Zion Center of Deliverance. The details of the Cam Newton investigation report by ESPN spends great length analyzing the permit process of Holy Zion Center. Cecil Newton’s Holy Zion ministry was cited for code violations to its structure, was reportedly short on cash, the details of which were covered by local news in 2009. But Cecil Newton local news in September 2009 that he had cash on hand for the repairs.
When asked Friday where Holy Zion got the cash for its work, Cecil Newton said “I’m not going to get into something like that”. Bishop Newton has admitted that NCAA investigation officials asked for bank accounts of Holy Zion; Newton provided them.
And yet, locals are defending Cecil Newton as not the type of person who would solicit funds for his church in an alleged pay-for-play scheme. “That’s not the kind of a man he is,” a friend tells the AJC today “He’s the pastor of a church and has really worked in instilling godly principles in his kids.”
In fact, many details, if not at all, of the allegations against Cam Newton don’t line up. Auburn says it has never spoken with Kenny Rogers, the person who allegedly solicited Mississippi State for Newton. Cecil Newton says he barely knows Rogers. Rogers says he hasn’t spoken to John Bond in twenty years. And Rogers says “A school never paid me for a kid and alumni never paid me for a kid. Period. Point blank”. The NCAA has yet to comment about the matter.
Cam Newton NCAA Investigation to Alter Season?
The Cam Newton NCAA investigation may not yield much in the end. Yet since a Cam Newton NCAA investigation exists, it puts a cloud over the entire BCS and Heisman picture. Until this week, all of the news about the
Auburn quarterback was positive, as he is in place to win the Heisman, and take Auburn to a championship. But this week, his very legitimacy has been questioned, due to conveniently timed rumors. However, all talk of the Cam Newton NCAA investigation must be put aside today, since he is about to retake the field.
The Heisman favorite has been dogged by rumors that a representative made a cash offer last year, for his signature to Mississippi State. What's more, according to former Mississippi State player John Bond, Kenny Rogers had other schools increase their offer to $200,000.
The Cam Newton NCAA investigation may have actually started a while back, as Newton's father was allegedly asked to hand over his bank statements last month. If this was going on quietly before, Bond's claims to ESPN have now made it the story of college football.
If Newton and Auburn weren't at such high places right now, perhaps this wouldn't have leaked so publicly. As it is, the quarterback is a Heisman frontrunner, and Auburn will be playing for a national championship if they win out. Therefore, rumors like this are more news worthy, even if nothing concrete has been found yet.
Although the Cam Newton NCAA Investigation allegations center on Rogers' offer to Mississippi State, everyone wants to know if he made such an offer to Auburn - or if he did, whether the Newtons knew about it. Even the implication can put new doubt on his eligibility, especially with him and his team on the brink of major achievements.
But for all the questions over the last few days, Newton and the Tigers have to put it aside on the field. Fortunately, Auburn stands to get a break today, as they host Chattanooga in what may be little more than target practice. Yet they hope the story will die down by the time they face greater challengers - like in the winner-take-all Iron Bowl against Alabama in three weeks.
