Elvis and Anabelle

Elvis Moreau (Max Minghella) runs the Moreau Funeral Home, having undertaken the duties of embalming  and setting up funerals in lieu of his father, Charlie (Joe Mantegna), who has slowly been losing his lucidity after his wife's suicide.

Driving to the store one afternoon, Elvis meets a small-town beauty queen taking pictures with her family on the side of road. He watches her and is attracted to her. While her mother (Mary Steenburgen) remarks that Elvis watching them was creepy, Anabelle Leigh (Blake Lively) feels strangely different about it.

Elvis spends his time concocting stories and reading them to his father, who enjoys his stories but who is worried about Elvis. He constantly urges his son to go out and seek women to date, to get a girlfriend and have children of his own, as he won't live forever. Elvis is reluctant to do any of that and reacts quietly, immediately leaving the room.

Remembering Elvis and Anabelle: Blake Lively's Real Breakthrough

This week The Cold Case remembers Elvis & Anabelle, the 2007 indie that links Gossip Girl, the Weinsteins and Edgar Allen Poe.

If Prince Charming brought Sleeping Beauty back from her deathly slumber in the media-saturated 21st century, then he’d be plastered across the tabloids as a necrophiliac perv while she’d be hounded by Oprah for a tell-all interview. And that’s precisely what happens in 2007’s Elvis & Anabelle, a dark and dreamy slice of Southern gothic romance that’s not too far removed from our previous Cold Case, Lawn Dogs.

Playing like a cross between Six Feet Under and Sixteen Candles, writer-director Will Geiger’s indie pairs Max Minghella’s mortician Elvis with Blake Lively’s bulimic beauty queen Anabelle. When she snuffs it at the very moment she’s crowned Miss Texas Rose, her body winds up on the slab of his family’s funeral home, which he’s had to run singlehandedly since his widower — and hunchbacked — father (Joe Mantegna) was rendered simple by redneck stupidity.

Elvis and Anabelle

Elvis and Annabelle does a superb job of capturing and dealing with the inner struggles of both characters. The natural chemistry between Max and Blake makes them perfect for the lead roles.

Joe Montegna also delivered in his role and touches your heart. He is genuine and in-character throughout the entire film.

I also liked how the film naturally transitioned from a darker, black & white feel to a brighter and more colorful feel when Annabelle arrived at the house/mortuary.

Most independent movies have been filmed on very tight budgets and therefore have numerous flaws that are evident on the screen. Elvis and Annabelle also was filmed on a tight budget, but the director did an amazing job of bringing the entire film together in a way that truly minimizes the flaws. What an accomplishment.
